Amber Hour

The brief was one sentence: no overhead light. Everything followed from that — four hundred candles set at three heights, hurricane glass against the wind off the river, and a table run long enough that nobody sat more than two seats from someone they loved.

We built the canopy in the afternoon and lit it at seven. The guests walked into a courtyard that had been ordinary at lunch.
